'SET PHASERS TO FRAG'

From the fine folks at Raven Software who brought you Star Wars: Jedi Knight II - Jedi Outcast, a series of FPS games set in the Star Trek: Voyager universe. It follows the adventures of a beefed-up redshirt squad who tackle assignments and challenges too tough or dangerous for standard Starfleet away teams. There have been two games (plus one expansion) in the series:

These were, for a long time, generally regarded as the best of the Star Trek videogames, especially of the large wave that came in the period between Insurrection and Nemesis; they still may not capture that wonder of exploration and the moral questions that Trek is famous for, but they capture the rollicking action and adventure of the movies very well. Even today, they're still very solid shooters that manage to translate what was seen on the shows into good gameplay, although the id tech 3 engine has not aged as gracefully as some other games.
These Video Games provide examples of:
Alternative Title(s):Star Trek Voyager Elite ForceIndex
Star Trek: Voyager: Elite Force asked a very important question in 2000: what if Star Trek was, in fact, Quake? Raven Software (one of our favorite FPS developers, who went on to make Jedi Outcast and the 2009 Wolfenstein) built Elite Force in iD Tech 3, aka the Quake 3 engine. The resulting game was as cool as youâd expect: a First Contact-inspired FPS with a heavy focus on phasering the Borg in the phase.
Elite Force II isnât a Raven Software joint, but itâs still Quake in Star Trekâs clothing. But this time, instead of pulling from Voyager, it pulls from The Next Generation. Picard, Worf, and a few other crewmembers of the Enterprise E make guest appearances. The phaser rifles and Borg face-shooting remain intact.
11 years after release, iD Tech 3 still looks remarkably good, especially for Star Trek. The Borg ships glow a menacing neon green; the hallways of the Enterprise are stark and bright and donât need fancy modern lighting to look appropriately Next Generation. With a couple tricks, Elite Force II also runs at a very crisp 3K resolution on modern Windows. Sample me down, Chief OâBrien.
Install It
Sadly, unlike most of the wonderful games featured on Pixel Boost, Elite Force II isnât conveniently available on Steam or GOG. Blame that on Activision or Paramount or the mess of old IP rights. Maybe Elite Force will see a digital release someday. Until then, the best way to play it is to grab a used copy online. You can get one on Amazon for less than $40, or even a bit cheaper on Ebay. Just donât accidentally buy a PS2 copy of the original Elite Force. To install the game, youâll need a CD drive.
Play it in high resolution
Now comes the fun stuff. Elite Force II should work just fine on a modern system, but its in-game graphics settings are a bit limited. The maximum resolution, by default, is 1600x1200. After installing the game from the CDs, boot it up once, go into the video options, and crank everything up to the maximum. Make sure to click on the Advanced button to turn up the lighting, anti-aliasing, and other graphics settings to their maximums. Itâs not exactly a demanding game, these days.
After saving the video settings in-game, exit and navigate to the gameâs install folder. By default, itâs under Program Files (x86)/Activision/EF2. Then open the âbaseâ folder, where youâll be greeted by a whole bunch of config files. One of those files is named after your Windows profile. Find that config file (on the Large Pixel Collider, itâs DigitalStorm.cfg) and open it with Wordpad or your favorite HTML editor to set some custom graphics settings of your own.
At this point, there are two paths we can take. The first is simply running the game at your monitorâs native res. The second is running it at a higher resolution and downsampling, which takes about 5 minutes longer, but will give you a very sharp picture. Both paths involve adding the following settings to the config file:
I've tried this with multiple Xbox wired controllers and I even get this error when I plug my phone into my PC (although windows 10 will live update me saying that its configuring my device). Xbox one controller on windows 7.
Find the line that says: seta r_mode â#â and change the # to -1.
Above that line, add the following two lines:
seta r_customheight â####â
seta r_âcustomwidth â####â
Quick path: Fill in those two number values with your native resolution, like 1080 and 1920. The game will now render at that resolution. Save, and run the game!
Downsampling path: if you want to downsample, set customheight to 1800 and customwidth to 3200. This was the highest resolution I was able to get the game to run at; any higher and OpenGL failed to initialize.
Now, to have your computer properly downsample from that resolution, you have to do two things. One: download Duranteâs GeDoSaTo downsampling too. If you have an up-to-date version, 3200x1800 is one of the default downsampling resolutions, and the app should automatically downsample to your monitorâs native res. You shouldnât have to mess with any settings; just make sure GeDoSaTo is activated, and running in Blacklist mode.
Final step: because GeDoSaTo is DirectX based, but iD Tech runs on OpenGL, we need a .dll file that makes the two play nice together. Simply download GLDirect and extract it. Under bin/release is a file called opengl32.dll. Copy that .dll to Elite Force IIâs install folder to sit alongside its .exe.
Now boot up the game. If all goes well, itâll start up, and youâll see a GeDoSato notification in the top-left corner that itâs downsampling from 3200x1800 to your monitorâs native res. When you get in-game, you may find the FOV is a little too pushed-in for your new high resolution. Thatâs easy to adjust.
Pull up the console with the ~ key, and type: fov 95.
Thatâll set the FOV to 95, which is a pretty good value for 16:9. Go 100 or 105 for an even wider field of view. Time to shoot some Borg.
Mod it
In classic Quake fashion, there are plenty of mods out there for Elite Force II. Many of them are for the multiplayer, which you probably wonât be spending much time with. There is, however, a long-in-development co-op mod called the HZM Co-Op Mod that includes the complete singleplayer campaign. Give it a shot. You can also pick up some other player-made missions at ModDB.

Yesterday I had the urge to play a game that had slipped by me back when it was released for some reason: Elite Force. I thought it would be for sure available at GoG. Please bring it. And part 2 as well. Would drop 10-15 ⬠for each. By the way: love that my last wish 'Outlaws' was fulfilled ^^

I've only ever played this game through means that shall not be mentioned, but I'd snap it up if it were on GOG or even Steam legitimately.

One of the rare Star Trek games that crossed the line into mainstream appeal rather being just for us Trekkies. The fact its basically lost to time is sad, and puts the license owner in an incredibly poor light.

I would suggest that those who would like to play this, do not hold your breath too much for a realease on GOG. I'm pretty certain some of the rights to many Star Trek games might cost too much for the small amount of us Trekkies that would buy these Star Trek games.

I've just recently purchased the boxed version of this game, and with a few very easy steps, like installing a patch and no-cd (cd copy protection from those years doesn't work anymore), the game runs fabulous on Windows 10, no major work needed.

There is even a graphical overhaul mod to bring it to some much more recent standards graphics-wise.

I've decided, I'd build a nice big boxed collection of these older Star Trek games!

For the love of GoG, GoG! Get this title from Activision and revive it! You would make so much money off this. DO IT!

I am trying to play Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force for PC, which is an older game based off ID Tech 3 (the Quake 3 engine). In comparison to Quake 3 this game has a variety of additional options, but still seems to be limited to a specific set of resolutions, none of which seem to include 1920x1080.
Is it possible to set this game to use a custom resolution of 1920x1080?
For additional bonus points, is it possible to get this game to run in a borderless window mode?

To allow ID Tech 3 games (including Quake 3, Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force, Return to Castle Wolfenstein and many more) to run using a widescreen or custom resolution you can edit the configuration file created after you first run the game.
In the case of Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force, that configuration file is located in
<Installation Folder>baseefefconfig.cfg .
The first change you need to make, is you need to find a configuration line that says the following;
seta r_mode 'x'
Change the
x to -1 .
Then, either change or add the following two lines;
seta r_customwidth 'x' seta r_customheight 'y'
Where
x and y are the width x height values for the resolution you wish to run, in this instance 1920x1080.
Finally if you want to adjust the field of view drawn in game, you can do so by changing or adding the following;
seta cg_fov 'x'
Star Trek Elite Force Wiki
Where
x is the field of view in degrees, defaulting to 90.
The ID Tech 3 engine does not natively support 'Fullscreen Windowed Mode', and thus neither does Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force. However there is this nice article on Steam which details how to make any game run in fullscreen windowed mode, and I have tested this with Elite Force and it works fine.
